On the eve or "the surge"...
Bush: "we're going to double down"
Petraeus: "no, we're all in"
Rummy, the JCS and Casey were all anti-surge...but Bush apparently relied on civilian leadership in the White House (Hadley et al) and retired military officials when crafting policy for Iraq post-2006.
I missed the 60 MINUTES interview, but I am reading this series on the Washington Post website - http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/06/AR2008090602691.html?hpid=topnews . It's the 4th in a series of books Woodward has wrote on the Bush Admin.

For your Junto Jomework, I urge all of you to read David Halberstam's THE BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST. This book, which reads like a novel, narrates all the players involved in the Kennedy administration during the escalation of the Vietnam War. It bridges the gap between WW2 and Vietnam for the reader while detailing all the big names from the state and defense departments who worked to influence strategy. I see a lot of parallels in the way Woodward and Halberman write.
