Sad statement. Is this widespread? Given that this is not a classroom in Vermont or San Francisco but in a traditionally "red" area of one of this year's most hotly-contested swing states, I would venture to say that this is happening everywhere in America, to the detriment of independent thought and of our democracy.
I have a friend who teaches in DC Public Schools. An Ohio native, she's got swing state pedigree but she feels that she has generally "progressive" politics. You know what she refuses to do, though? Tell her students who she'll vote for. She was pressed and pressed on this over the past month, but refused to budge, trying to indoctrinate her students not in her ideology but in America's cherished tradition and right of a confidential vote. Why would some teachers hold their own ideology above a lesson on American civics and common decency?
